About Our Organization

According to the 2013 Historic Downtown Cannelton Revitalization Plan commissioned by the city of Cannelton, “there is a very high quantity and quality of historic structures in downtown Cannelton and the Cannelton Historic District.  This quantity of historic resources ranks among the highest in the state and is very significant for a community of the size of Cannelton.  These historic resources combined with Cannelton’s location on the Ohio River Scenic Byway have significant tourism potential.”

“The key to success in Cannelton will be capturing the local tourist.  The strong heritage, historic architecture and proximity to the Ohio River allow Cannelton the opportunity to develop this market as part of a downtown revitalization strategy.”

In 2014, a group of individuals who agree with this assessment came together to form a non-profit organization that could work to preserve and restore those historic assets.  That organization is Renew Cannelton, Inc.

Renew Cannelton, Inc.’s mission is “to facilitate the revitalization of Cannelton, Indiana and the surrounding area by enhancing the attractiveness of the community and by working to preserve historic sites, buildings, objects and antiquities of significance.”

Renew Cannelton, Inc. is presently working to fund a Historic Cannelton Gateway Sign to be placed at the intersection of Hwys. 237 & 66 at the Bob Cummings Lincoln Trail Bridge.  Greg Harris was commissioned to design and construct the sign.  The sign will be constructed of sandstone and will replicate the Indiana Cotton Mill’s twin towers.  As soon as funding has been acquired, construction will begin.
